Born in Schio (Vicenza) in 1955, Aldo Cibic moved to Milan in 1979, where he met Ettore Sottsass. The following year, under the direction of Sottsass, the Memphis group of designers was formed: Cibic was one of the founders together with Martine Bedin, Michele De Lucchi, Matteo Thun, Nathalie Du Pasquier, and Marco Zanini, who were all in their early twenties at the time. They worked with people such as Andrea Branzi, Michael Graves, and Arata Isozaki, in a group that set out to break the rules, experimenting with daring combinations of alternative materials, historical forms and kitsch motifs.
In 1989 Cibic left Memphis and branched out on his own, developing a language more inclined towards the harmony of ideas and equilibrium of proportions. Together with Luigi Marchetti, Antonella Spiezio, and Chuck Felton, he founded Cibic&Partners: Cibic designed and produces his own line of objects and furnishings intended specifically to improve the quality of everyday life: his Standard project.
Since then, his work has extended to interior design, product and exhibit design, and large-scale architectural projects. Cibic has taught at the Domus Academy in Milano, at the Polytechnic, Fabrica, and IUAV in Venice, at the Royal College of Art in London, and at Tongji University in Shanghai. He currently has two studios, one in Milan and the other in Arcugnano, where he also has his permanent Workshop, which he founded a few years ago.
