Alfa Romeo has always been committed to reducing the environmental impact at every stage of the life cycle of their vehicles. Through this commitment they have developed a global policy for the protection of and respect for the environment through constant improvements in the production process and the creation of products of increasing Eco-compatibility.

Fittingly, under the European Directive, “End-of-life Vehicle Directive” (2000/53/EG) Alfa Romeo has taken steps to ensure that vehicles that have reached the end of their life can be disposed of with minimum environmental impact.

The ELV Directive has now been transposed into Irish law and from January 2007 requires all manufacturers’ and importers’ to:

• Take back qualifying* vehicles they have put on the market at the end of their useful life ensuring that they are disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner.
• Ban the use of hazardous materials (for new cars from 3rd November 2003 excluding some parts where it is essential for use) such as Lead, Mercury, Cadmium and Hexavalent Chromium.
• To meet the re-cycling and recovery targets of 85 percent by weight in 2006 (including a maximum of 5% energy recovery) and from 2015 a re-cycling and recovery target of 95% (including a maximum of 10% energy) recovery is proposed.

*A qualifying vehicle must meet either of the following conditions:

• A passenger vehicle with a maximum of 9 seats
• A commercial vehicle with a maximum weight of 3.5 Tonnes

The vehicle must also meet the following;

• All significant components such as engine, gearbox, chassis, bodywork, catalytic converter, wheels and electronic control units must be present in the vehicle.
• There must be no additional waste in the vehicle.
• The owner/keeper of the vehicle must have the vehicles registration document or able to supply proof of identity.

Once your vehicle has been handed over to the dismantler you will be issued with a Certificate of Destruction (CoD) which you need for the final deregistration of you car. The dismantler will then recycle and dispose of you car in an environmentally friendly way.

Alfa Romeo is currently working to expand it’s network of ATFs (Approved Treatment Facilities) in Ireland to ensure compliance with the Regulation and convenience for the customer.
